Peter Wright is the champion of Hildesheim. In a thrilling final, he defeated Luke Littler 8 – 5 and was crowned the winner of the NEO.bet German Darts Championship. The 54-year-old not only secured his ninth European Tour title, but also £30,000 in prize money.
‘He blew me off the board with his 180s in the first phase of the match and I just believed in myself and wanted to keep going somehow. But it’s not just about me believing in myself. All the fans believed in me. That means so much to me,’ said Peter Wright after his victory.
For the first time in 2024, Peter Wright makes it past the round of 16 on the European Tour. On his way to the title, he defeated the ‘Meenzer Bub’ Niko Springer, Stephen Bunting and Gian van Veen. He won the quarter-final against three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen with an outstanding average of 109 points before triumphing 7-5 over Dave Chisnall in the semi-finals. It is Wright’s first title on the European Tour since the Czech Darts Open 2023.
Luke Littler leaves the stage in defeat for the first time in his third European Tour final.
The six German participants were steady overall and left Hildesheim with mixed feelings. Niko Springer showed a strong performance in the first round, but was defeated 6 – 4 by the eventual champion Peter Wright despite an average of 95 points. Max Hopp won his first match against Jose de Sousa on his return to the European Tour, but was then beaten 6 – 4 by Joe Cullen in the second round.
Ricardo Pietreczko had focussed in advance on regaining his old form. The defending champion won his second round match against Simon Whitlock 6 – 3 and only narrowly lost to Nick Kenny in the decider on Sunday. Germany’s number one Martin Schindler won his second round match 6 – 4 against Mensur Suljovic and defeated ‘Hollywood’ Chris Dobey in the round of 16. The match against Dave Chisnall was the last stop. After a crazy fightback, he was defeated in the decider.
